ancestral pain

the pain
runs deep
it lives in dreams
& broken sleep
endless scraps of
Sunday school dresses
smell of burning flesh
& scorched tresses

the pain
it creeps
unbidden
she weeps
signs that point
to a crowded back
unfair laws
promoting endless lack

that pain
she tries to hide
needing
just one peaceful day
but that pain
is relentless
it never quite
goes away
