losing Eden

is it possible
that God has grown
angry with us?
disgusted by our petty differences
the way we forever fight ‘n fuss

perhaps the Lord
has had enough
of so many spiteful lies
maybe it’s not climate change,
but retribution from heaven’s skies

ever wonder
if the Almighty
regrets humans – His creations?
a buncha selfish hedonists
living only for sensation

could well be
God’s furious
with all the killing ‘n the hate
I know if I were God
I’d put a lock on heaven’s gate

if I were God
I’d be pissed off
no matter what the sin
I’d be angry at the lack of love:
I’d wipe everything out ‘n start again

just suppose
that God has feelings
the way you ‘n I do
if someone spits on all your gifts
wouldn’t you want to start anew?

you listenin’ Lord?

if you’re gonna rain
then rain
chuck it down
let it pour
cuz right now
rain
is what I’m longin’ for

go on ‘n do it
rain
don’t tease me with
storm clouds
need an excuse
to stay inside
away from crazy folk in crowds

if you’re gonna rain
then bring it
gimme thunder
gimme lightning
wash away the thoughts
of a future
that looks frightening

don’t fuck around
just rain
for a mighty storm
I’m hopin’
show me you’re
still in charge
let the gates of heaven open

doubt & discourse

where are you, O Lord?
the planet is sick
with a virus more lethal
than any ice-pick

where are you, my God?
the earth grows blighted
your people are ignoring
advice experts have cited

they’re clamouring for pubs
longing for jet-fuelled holidays
while others mourn their loved ones
with eyes swollen & glazed

“but I need a haircut!”
“I wanna go to the gym!”
lives needlessly lost
due to another’s selfish whim

& where are you, my Lord?
as the faithful call
are you watching
your creations downfall?

fear not, my child
for I am here
in the silent skies above you
so cloudless, so clear

I am present in the rain
making the flowers you love grow
I smile at you from the faces
of everyone you know

I’ve not abandoned you
so have no fear
for I am the Lord your God
& I am always here

thank you, dear Lord
for reassuring me
as I toil in my garden today
thanks for my blessings I offer to thee

Sunday worship

the roof is high
endless miles of miraculous blue
I gaze on it reverence
inspired by the view

so high is that ceiling
spare white clouds like wispy souls
for such a space I’m thankful
I know God’s at the controls

the floor is well-laid
older than countless years
its borne the weight of thousands
eons of shocks & tears

done in a hopeful shade of green
that must have taken hours
my heart dances in awed silence
while bees sing amongst the flowers

I’m a gardener, I’m a shepherd
paying no heed to the clock
sending praise to God above
as I tend my floral flock

& when at last the church bells ring
the words “Hi Mommy” leave my lips
it’s then I smell her in the air
she lightly clasps my fingertips

once again I’m reassured
the Lord has heard my anguished cries
my Mom is forever with me
her love is infiniteit never dies

presence

she is there
reflected in the bathroom mirror
gazing out with eyes
strong & clear

she is there
cupped in the palm of my left hand
a firm yet gentle tug
which each morning helps me stand

& he is there
a sentinel beside my bed
the loving voice of reason
that speaks softly in my head

he is there
whenever I am most afraid
when I feel I can’t go on
his memory lends me aid

they’re all there
watching out for me
collective protection
that forces demons to flee

God is there
in the stormy skies above
shedding His precious tears
on the garden that I love

God is there
in my fingers on these keys
He’s my partner’s arms
giving me a gentle squeeze

God is here
on my skin, in my heart
assuring me that all is well
as I make a brand-new start

the tale of the little angel

there was once a little angel
who had a broken wing
sad because she could no longer fly,
she decided she’d no longer sing

so she left her heavenly home
waved farewell to the celestial choir
& wished herself down to earth,
to see if a new talent she could acquire

soon the angel found herself
on earth’s solid ground
where she wandered, open-mouthed
at all the chaos that she found

the people in the north
disliked the folks who lived east
they were denying their poorer brethren
a share in their Christmas feast

while the people of the west
scorned all those dwelling in the south
there was hatred & incivility
spewing from everybody’s mouth

& the angel was aggrieved
for God had created man for bliss
now it seemed as if all mankind,
in their greed, had forgotten this

they were worshipping money:
dollars, pounds & pence
people selling their souls for money
to the angel this made no sense

men & women in thrall to things
& the thrill of their acquisitions
wanting bigger, better, more
losing their once happy dispositions

rapes & murders & child abuse
destruction of the land
lines at food banks & homeless shelters
the poor angel didn’t understand

she’d come from a perfect place
where life was heavenly
surely this disorder
was never meant to be

so she cried unto her God,
“My Father, I feel so blue,
I’m one tiny angel whose wing is broken,
what would you have me do?”

& God smiled down on the angel
before he replied
gently asking her,
“Did you forget how my Son died?

greatness I bestowed on you –
I blessed you with the gift of song
but you bemoan your broken wing,
you chose to forget that you are strong

mankind is flawed, but you can help them
& it’s such a simple thing
unlock that power behind your jaws, child:
I bid you open your mouth & sing”

the angel realised that her silence
had been a major blunder
as closing her eyes & opening her mouth
she sang a song more powerful than thunder

a song of redemption & forgiveness
the joys of heaven above
soothing words that offered hope,
& a reminder of God’s eternal love

as she sang her strength returned
peace suffused her soul
& the little angel’s broken wing
was again made whole

so she flew back home to God
& her beloved celestial choir
there to sing endlessly
hitting notes that were ever higher

but what happened down on earth?
well, the hostility did cease
& for the first time in a long time,
all God’s children knew His peace

this is a test

in my smile folks see a song
‘n people think of me as strong
through every trial I’ve danced along
but right now my faith is gone

I rode the streets of my life, totally in control
had work I loved that made me feel whole
jobless now, I’m facin’ the dole
or damp city streets with a beggin’ bowl

feel like the dupe in a nightmare swindle
‘n in my belly fear starts to kindle
helplessly I watch my bank balance dwindle
my belief in you – can it be rekindled?

I’m strugglin’ to remember that I’m blessed
but this current state I so detest
‘n I don’t wanna be scared or depressed
but my feelings must be expressed

I need you, Lord –guidance & love are requested
cause in this place I’m heavily invested
few are the times that I’ve been bested
reckon that’s why I’m bein’ tested

exiles in the land of Nod

okay,
so Mary Magdalene was a whore
but if it’s true that God made everything,
then He made our bodies:
He opened lust’s door

apostle to the apostles
defamed as a lowlife cur
she was a tower an’ a fortress
an’ I know
my Lord loved her

yep,
Jezebel an’ Delilah
messed up royal
but my Lord overlooked this
to forgiveness He was loyal

both women were strong
yet by love they were brought low
one can discover
for oneself
what historians have failed to show

each sunrise we awake
in awe an’ fear of the living God
only to accept
by sunset
our return to worm-filled sod

‘s true: nobody’s perfect
we’ve all fallen short of God
we all of us
are sinners

known & unknown angels

by known & unknown angels
I live my life surrounded
their ethereal presence
help keep me safe & grounded

before me is Raphael
his healing light shines on me
when my body & soul would sicken
he heals all infirmity

behind me stands mighty Gabriel
granting mercy & consolation
tis his arms I fall into
when I’m beset by desolation

on my right hand is Michael
great Prince of the Seraphim
every day he helps me battle
forces of darkness so evil & grim

on my left hand glows Uriel
holding aloft his fiery sword
teaching me the path of the heart
that I may better love the Lord

just above me hovers Daddy
along with those I loved & lost
known & unknown angels
protecting me at any cost
